Top Reasons to Choose Brooklyn Heights Dental® for Sedation Dentistry

  • Sedation Under One Roof
    • Brooklyn Heights Dental® offers two sedation options: nitrous oxide for slight to moderate anxiety, and IV sedation for major procedures or severe dental phobia. We deliberately do not offer oral sedation. The effects of oral sedation are more difficult to monitor in real time and produce lingering side effects after the appointment ends. By focusing on nitrous and IV, we keep the patient's level of relaxation precisely controllable from the first minute to the last.
  • State-of-the-Art IV Sedation Monitoring
    • IV sedation at Brooklyn Heights Dental® is administered with state-of-the-art monitoring devices that track the patient's vitals throughout the procedure and let us adjust the level of sedation in real time. The result is a deeply relaxed state where you can still answer questions and respond to the treatment team, with the amnesia effect that means you'll remember little to nothing about your appointment.
  • Six Decades of Brooklyn Heritage
    • Brooklyn Heights Dental® dates back to 1956, when Dr. Stanislaus's father opened the practice on Montague Street. Dr. Eugene D. Stanislaus, a highly trained second-generation dentist, took over the practice in 1985. Six decades of continuous Brooklyn dentistry means a depth of community trust and clinical experience that newer practices simply have not had the time to build.

What Brooklyn Patients Say About Brooklyn Heights Dental®

“My visit with Dr. Stanislaus and his wonderful staff was a great experience. They demonstrated kindness, care and professionalism. This was my first visit and it left a lasting impression. Dr. Stanislaus listened to my concerns and explained in detail what the x-rays revealed and the best options for me. I was looking for a new dentist and I believe my search is over. Thank you Dr. Stanislaus!”

Imagine a Better Dental Experience

Sedation dentistry is the use of sedative medication to induce a state of calm and relaxation. Different sedatives achieve different levels of relaxation. Generally, patients can expect:

More Comfortable Treatment

With sedation, you can enjoy more comfortable treatments at our office in Brooklyn Heights, which also serves the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn and surrounding New York communities. With sedation dentistry, you can feel calmer and less aware of the details of the procedure.

Less Time in the Dental Chair

Sedation helps you relax, minimizing resistance and tension during treatment. This allows Drs. Eugene D. Stanislaus or Lisa Reid to work more efficiently and quickly.

More Likely to Make Regular Appointments

Once you experience the benefits of sedation dentistry, you will likely feel less anxious about future visits and will be more likely to get regular preventative care.

Types of Sedation We Offer

Our Dentists Can Help Select the Right Level of Sedation

Drs. Stanislaus and Reid at Brooklyn Heights Dental® have decades of experience selecting the right level of sedation for patients, taking into account their pain threshold and the procedure they are undergoing.
We offer:

patient receiving sedation

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is an effective method of light sedation that is safe enough for children. It is a colorless gas that, when inhaled, puts patients into a state of relaxation and effectively manages pain.

Nitrous oxide is administered by placing a mask over your nose so you can safely inhale a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Our experienced dentists skillfully adjust the level of medication to meet your needs. It is a type of conscious sedation so you will remain fully awake, but relaxed. Because the effects wear off quickly, you likely will not need anyone to escort you home after treatment.

Is It Right for Me? Nitrous oxide is ideal for less complex dental procedures and for people who have slight to moderate anxiety that just need to take the edge off their fear. Most patients are good candidates for nitrous oxide, however, women in their first trimester of pregnancy should not use it.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered intravenously with a needle in your arm or hand. It works quickly and allows our dentists to continually adjust your level of sedation to maintain the correct level of calm and relaxation. Once sedated, you will be in a deeply relaxed state but still able to answer questions and respond to your treatment team. IV sedation creates an amnesia effect, so patients do not have unpleasant memories after treatment.

Your level of sedation will be pre-determined and monitored using our state-of-the-art monitoring devices, ensuring your complete comfort and safety. IV sedation takes some time to wear off so you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you until the medication completely leaves your system.

Is It Right for Me? IV sedation is typically used for major dental procedures like implant placement, for people with moderate to severe dental anxiety, or for patients with back or neck pain or who have difficulty sitting for long periods.

What About Oral Sedation?

Some other dentistry offices offer oral sedation. We have found that the effects of oral sedation
can be more difficult to monitor and also produce lingering side effects.
